S.M.S.H. Forestry Club

Motto: " Our forests mean life. Let us enjoy them and help protect them for future generations."

The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources encourages all schools to set up forestry clubs, to develop interest in the forests of Brunei Darussalam.

Batang Duri Forest, Temburong, was the venue for the first S.M.S.H. Forestry Club event in 1997: a treasure hunt involving over 250 students. Since then, a number of successful excursions and competitions have taken place.

Last year, S.M.S.H. was one of five schools chosen by the Forestry Department to take part in the Princess Rashidah Young Nature Scientists Award. Our team of eight students has been working on a project titled: "An Investigation of Freshwater Ecosystems in a Tropical Rainforest Environment".

They have been comparing two sites, above and below a waterfall, on a tributary of the Sungai Temburong. The data they have collected shows some interesting differences, which they are attempting to explain.

The project has involved three weekend fieldwork excursions to Ulu Temburong National Park and meetings every week to analyse results, discuss findings and draw conclusions.

For the past two months, team members have been preparing a computer presentation of their findings for the awards ceremony in March.

Team members are:

Angie Lim Jong En, Buli Anak Jang, Chin Me Ying, Jackson Gelawat Bin Padan, Lydia Wong Chwang Yuh, Nahidah Binte Lamat (Captain), Rasidah Binte Haji Abu Bakar and Siti Bazlina Binte Mohddin.

Everyone is looking forward to the ceremony. Good luck, team!
